The project

Project to promote the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in Europe, supporting the implementation of the LNG structure for maritime transport and port operations along the Spanish and Portuguese sections of the Basic Network of Corridors in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and contributing significantly to the European strategy for the implementation of alternative fuels.

Project objectives

The main objectives are:

  • To contribute to the National Policy Framework of Spain and Portugal, so that institutional and technological progress keep pace; with a view to complying with the requirements of Directive 2014/94/EU.
  • Provide a roadmap and investment plan to scale up the results of the 11 integrated pilot implementations, with the aim of achieving greater commercial deployment of LNG infrastructures and equipment for maritime transport and port services along the two corridors in the Iberian Peninsula. This objective will be achieved by implementing eleven real trials in Spain, and by addressing the lack of a harmonised and coordinated approach in LNG logistics and in the development of infrastructure and equipment, which prevents economies of scale in supply and necessary demand for the deployment of LNG as a fuel for transportation.

Expected results

The project aims to:

  • Offer know-how to other European countries for the development and expansion of the LNG sector.
  • Develop a safe logistics and distribution chain and efficient for LNG, integrated into the transport sector; particularly maritime transport in the Iberian Peninsula.
  • Promote clean energy in transport, with the support of the European Union.
Core LNGas

Participation of the Barcelona Port Authority

The Port of Barcelona participates in the project with four activities:

  • Transformation of a barge to supply LNG to ships.
  • Design of a tugboat powered by LNG.
  • Construction of a Ro-Ro vessel with a mobile gas generating unit during hoteling.
  • Adaptation of two Straddle Carriers propelled by an LNG engine.
