Theming of Nova Bocana
With the construction of the Marina Vela and the whole of Nova Bocana area, the possibility was raised for special treatment of the new public spaces generated. The idea is to include content that contributes to remembering and disseminating the history of the place.
The project
The Nova Bocana Theming project aims to incorporate a historical and cultural approach to the port in the new spaces. Various elements contribute to making the port history known, both the evolution of the infrastructures and work on the docks as well as its social aspect and the popular use of the spaces.
It materialises through the exhibition of Historical elements and images that allow us to evoke the past within the framework of contemporary architecture and urbanism in three informative spaces: the Nou Passeig del Trencaones, the Rosa dels Vents square and the Rambla de la Marina.
The New Paseo del Trencaones
This promenade becomes a new limit between the sea and the port and between the sea and the city, restoring relationships that used to exist on the old breakwater. It is the promenade of poems, with a performance designed to evoke the feelings that arise when walking along the most maritime promenade in Barcelona with a series of plaques along the route containing fragments of poems by renowned authors inspired by the sea.
At the end of the promenade, visitors find the Rosa dels Ports, which marks the position and orientation of the twelve international ports with which the Port of Barcelona has established a more important relationship.
In Rosa dels Vents square
In the free space of the Rosa de los Vents square, a space is proposed for temporary exhibitions that explain various port themes, from the evolution of the port, infrastructures, work on the docks or the leisure activities of citizens in port spaces.
For this, frames are up with the ventilation cubes of the Dry Marina, which supports the exhibition material and also has the function of organizing the space and the flows of people and delimiting the central space intended for restoration (aedicule).
Rambla de la Marina: the promenade
Rambla de la Marina is the space occupied by the previous breakwater, which was the outermost breakwater of the port before opening the Bocana Nord. To commemorate it, various actions have been devised.
Among those that is located along the promenade, there is a large vinyl with a photograph of the old breakwater that is placed on the pavement of the stairs access to the Rambla. On the new pavement of the Rambla de la Marina, the layout of the old breakwater is reproduced and at two points of the layout, two stones are exhibited found during the excavations of the civil works of Nova Bocana, formerly blocks from the shoulder of the dam of l'Est.
At the point where the Rambla opens and expands its section, a large model is placed in the shape of a bench that represents the silhouette of the Port of Barcelona as it was in the first half of the 20th century. Next, on the pavement, the current port profile is delimited, which allows us to appreciate the evolution and growth of the port infrastructure.
Rambla de la Marina: Viewpoint area
In the area that is generated between the new Viewpoint building and the water, various cultural interventions have been done.
Thanks to the geometry of the new Viewpoint bridge-building, a covered space is generated that can be used as the exhibition core to explain the overall content of Nova Bocana Theming project. There is also a large reproduction of the drawing Barceloneta-Rompeolas, by Ricard Opisso.
Before reaching the stands there is an area where tables and chairs are located that recreates those that were at the end of the old breakwater. Likewise, the new Rambla de la Marina ends in a slipway facing the sea and an orderly breakwater. Reproducing the old structures used by anglers, a walkway is built, which functions as a lookout and allows visitors to remain suspended above the sea.
