The project
Global project to support investments in the ports of Barcelona and Civitavecchia to cope with the growth in freight traffic and integrate existing logistics chains. This project considers the Motorways of the Sea (AdM or MoS) as one of the main drivers of international trade in the Mediterranean. The characteristics of the seaports is a crucial part in the decision of the carriers when choosing a sea leg and refers both to the efficiency of the ports and their port services, as well as to the fluidity of their connections in the interior.
Prepared for the future
According to official forecasts, freight traffic on the Motorways of the Sea link between the ports of Barcelona and Civitavecchia will grow approximately 2.5% per year between 2015 and 2020. For this reason, investments are being made in both ports, such as the final construction of dock II for MoS traffic in the port of Civitavecchia and the improvement of the MoS infrastructure in the Port of Barcelona.
Participation of the Barcelona Port Authority
The main focus of the project is the upgrade of the existing infrastructure with the aim of increasing the MoS capacity. Specifically, in the Port of Barcelona, it consists of adapting the Contradic quay (currently used for solid bulk cargo) to accommodate long-distance coastal maritime traffic, reinforcing the quay and expanding the existing Ro-Ro ramp. Likewise, the existing railway terminal will be adapted to transport new vehicles and allow distribution in the western Mediterranean through the current short sea shipping lines.
