Port water sanitation network
One of the main actions that has contributed to improving the quality of port waters has been the construction of the new sewage treatment network in 2000 and 2001.
Network operation
With a total length of more than 30 km of collectors and 16 pumping stations, the network collects the wastewater generated by activities located in the port's service area. Later, it connects through 14 points with the metropolitan interceptor collector, which leads it to the Llobregat and Besós treatment stations.
Telematic management
The management of the network is carried out by remote control through thermal and hydrocarbon sensors, level buoys in the pumping stations and actuators in the pumps. The network entailed an investment of 30 million euros.
Cleaner waters
Since the year 2000, the Port of Barcelona has constantly improved the quality of its waters thanks to different actions. Among them, the new sanitation network.
Relationship with the Barcelona network
Another factor for improving the quality of port waters has been the progressive reduction in discharges from the unitary sanitation system of the city of Barcelona during rainy seasons.
Improvements since 1995
The contributions of organic matter to the basins due to discharges from the city's sanitation system have decreased by 75% since 1995. This has been due to the containment and lamination of avenues and the connection between sanitation basins that the city has been carrying out over the years.
