NEXIGEN 1+2 represents a transformative initiative to decarbonize port operations and maritime activities in the Mediterranean, with the Port of Barcelona as the central actor. By implementing innovative shore-side electricity (OPS) infrastructure, the project will enable ships to connect to the port’s electrical grid while at berth, drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions, noise, and air pollution. This is a critical step in aligning the port’s operations with EU Green Deal targets and advancing its role as a leader in sustainable port management.

The project focuses on a holistic approach to electrification, encompassing the installation of state-of-the-art OPS systems across key terminals, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and ensuring seamless integration with the regional grid. With a strong emphasis on technical excellence, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency, NEXIGEN 1+2 serves as a model for scalable decarbonization initiatives in ports across Europe.

Beyond infrastructure, the project prioritizes knowledge sharing, capacity building, and stakeholder engagement. Through targeted dissemination activities, the lessons learned from NEXIGEN 1+2 will contribute to the development of greener, more efficient ports, both within the Mediterranean region and beyond. The Port of Barcelona’s commitment to long-term sustainability ensures that the results of this initiative will extend well past the project’s duration, fostering a greener maritime future.
