Sustainable maritime transport: Eco Barcelona
Ships are the main emitter of polluting gases and particles in the port. In addition to the port's own initiatives, the involvement of shipowners and maritime operators is essential to reverse this situation.
Video showing the inaugural call of the vessel ECO Barcelona at the Port of Barcelona, celebrated on February 5, 2021. The content visualizes the commitment of the Grimaldi Group and the Port of Barcelona to sustainability and decarbonization of maritime transport.
The video presents the ECO Barcelona, second ship of the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) class, one of 12 hybrid ro-ro vessels ordered by the Grimaldi Group from the Chinese shipyard Jinling. The vessel's technical characteristics are shown: 238 meters in length, 34 meters in beam, 67,311 gross tonnage, and a cruising speed of 20.8 knots. The ship can transport 7,800 linear meters of rolling freight, equivalent to around 500 trailers, doubling the load capacity of the previous class while maintaining the same fuel consumption.
The technological innovations that make the ECO Barcelona one of the most eco-friendly ro-ro ships in the world are visualized: air lubrication system with RINA's "AIR-LUB" certification; Rolls-Royce propulsion system optimized with innovative propellers; integrated propulsion system between rudder and propeller (Promas Lite); waste heat recovery; and silicone paints on the hull. The vessel is equipped with electronically controlled engines and an exhaust gas purification system that reduces sulfur and particulate emissions.
The video highlights the hybrid technology that guarantees "Zero Emission in Port®": during navigation, the vessel consumes fossil fuel and recharges its lithium batteries via shaft generators and 350-600 square meters of solar panels. During the port call, the vessel operates exclusively on stored electricity, eliminating emissions at the berth. Images of the vessel moored at the Port of Barcelona, loading and unloading operations of vehicles and trailers, and statements from representatives of the Grimaldi Group and the Port of Barcelona about their shared commitment to environmental sustainability and decarbonization of maritime transport in the Mediterranean are shown.
ECO Barcelona. Working for sustainable maritime transport
Welcome, EcoBarcelona! On 5 February 2021, the new Green 5th Generation class ship of the Grimaldi Group made its first call at the Port of Barcelona. A hybrid ship that guarantees zero emissions thanks to its lithium batteries and 350 m² of solar panels.
