Twinned with the s'Arenella lighthouse in Port de la Selva, this lighthouse was inaugurated on 27th August 1919. It features a square building with a central tower, which rises prominently from the headland on the Tossa coast.
It was built to bridge the existing light gap between the lighthouses of Calella and Palamós. On the west side, its beam of light links up with the light from the Calella lighthouse and a little further to the southwest, it connects with the Montjuïc lighthouse that forms part of Barcelona's lighthouse system.
It stands at the highest point of Cap de Tossa, beyond the town's medieval walls, in a privileged position with a panoramic view. Located 70 metres above sea level, the tower rises to an additional 10 metres above its base, which means that its flash can be seen more than 30 miles away, even though its theoretical range is just 21 miles.
