Environmental development
The Port of Barcelona wants to be a benchmark in the Mediterranean and the Peninsula in the energy transition and its objective is the electrification of 50% of the container and Ro-Ro traffic docks between 2021 and 2025. As well as the promotion of intermodal transport to reduce the environmental footprint.
New energy model
The Port of Barcelona is going to lay the foundations for a profound transformation that will pivot on the electrification of the docks, the progressive growth of clean fuels, the generation of renewable energy and the implementation of an intelligent electricity network. To develop this new energy model, the operational objectives are:
- The Master Plan for energy transition.
- Creation of an entity with the aim of managing the port's energy network.
- Generation of renewable energy on port land.
The decarbonisation of port-maritime activity
This action involves implementing innovative initiatives to achieve a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions generated by port activity. The operational objectives are:
- Electrification of docks.
- Promote the use of more sustainable fuels and electric vehicles and equipment in the port area.
- Promote efficiency and energy savings of the APB buildings and concessions located in the port area.
- Promote the circular economy in the port area.
Reduction of pollutants
The Port of Barcelona wants to drastically and substantially reduce the pollutants generated by its activity, specifically the emissions of NOx, PM2.5, PM10 and SOx. To reduce pollution, the following operational objectives are implemented:
- Increase the number of calls for ships that use Liquefied Natural Gas.
- Encourage the calls of more sustainable ships.
- Promote sustainable mobility for all companies in the Port.
- Improve the quality of port waters.
Focus on intermodality
- Complete digitisation of rail mobility for containerised goods.
- Commissioning of a regular intermodal proximity rail shuttle and development of regular rail services for solid bulk agri-food products.
- Construction of the East terminal to replace the Morrot terminal and the railway motorway terminal in the old bed of the Llobregat river.
- Start of construction works construction of the new road and rail accesses in the southern area of the port and execution of the necessary works to allow the circulation of trains of up to 750 metres in length in the Barcelona-Zaragoza corridor.
- Providing new facilities and services the main inland terminals of the Port of Barcelona.
- Promotion of the Motorways of the Sea.
