The project

Project to improve the service of the maritime highways increasing the transport of electric cars by developing specific infrastructures in the Port of Barcelona and the port of Koper.

Objectives

The main objectives are:

  • Improve maritime transport of motor vehicles in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Update and modernise the infrastructures for direct access, by land and sea, to the ports of Koper and Barcelona.
  • Carry out a study to identify the logistical needs of the electric vehicle supply chain, including an analysis on the autonomy of these vehicles.
  • Pilot installation of charging columns for electric vehicles in both ports.

Results

The project aims to:

  • Get better maritime and land access to central ports, and a better connection to the Corridors of the Basic European Network.
  • Increase the number of vehicles transported through the Maritime Motorways by approximately 25,000 annually.
  • Relieve road congestion using more sustainable means of transport.
  • Improve intermodality by modernising the internal rail network of the Port of Barcelona to UIC gauge.
  • Be the first Spanish car terminal adapted to EU standards.
  • Obtain more knowledge on the distribution of hybrid and electric vehicles.

Participation of the Barcelona Port Authority

The Port of Barcelona participates in the project adapting the Príncipe de España railway terminal to meet the requirements of the European Union and building a new access to the terminal.

Support for electric vehicles

Both the port of Koper and Barcelona will study and develop a prototype for the installation of electric charging columns; and a study will evaluate the environmental performance of Neptune Line, the operator that links both ports.
