Integration in the urban and metropolitan environment

The 2021-2025 Strategic Plan sets the lines and projects to achieve full integration of the Port of Barcelona in the urban and metropolitan environment.

Adapt spaces to the fabric of the city

The Port of Barcelona wants to further the social integration between the port and the city. From an urban point of view, this means designing and creating spaces open to the public that promote a better understanding of port activities in general and facilitate the mobility of people between neighbouring districts.

To be more of a city

Some of these actions are detailed in the section dedicated to new projects in Port Vell:

  • Remodelling of the Fisherman's wharf.
  • Remodelling of the sheds on the Llevant dock.
  • Completion of new spaces on Nova Bocana.
  • Reform of the balcony on Paseo de Colón.
  • Reform of the Espanya wharf, with the demolition of the Cinesa and Imax cinemas and the remodelling of Plaça del l'Ictineu.
  • Development of the Morrot area.
  • Definition of the Port Centre.
  • Reform of the Drassanes docks and Barcelona, and transfer of all cruise and ferry activity to the Adossat pier.

Improve patency and mobility

In order to make the Port more permeable with the city and more accessible, especially for pedestrians and bicycles, it is planned to:

  • Develop maritime mobility with the projects of the nautical bus and the transfer platform.
  • Promote sustainable mobility in areas where it is appropriate, providing the necessary infrastructure: bike lanes, car parks, etc.
  • Improve circulation in the northern area of the Adossat pier and widen the bridge that connects it to the port and the city.
  • Analyse the flowsof vehicles and people to be able to anticipate the allocation of resources and optimise mobility through new technologies (sensors, cameras, artificial intelligence, etc.).
  • Improve internal public transport of the Port and between Barcelona and El Prat.

Greater public awareness

The Port of Barcelona has a cultural legacy of more than 2,500 years of history that we must preserve and disseminate. That is why we promote the city's port culture and identity, essential to understand that Barcelona has lived, lives and will live facing the sea and linked to the Mediterranean. The location of the Barcelona Maritime Museum and the Catalponia Museum of History in the Port allows synergies to be created in this regard.

Port culture and identity

The Port of Barcelona wants to create a coherent story that explains and preserves the maritime identity of the port and the city and is articulated through the following actions:

  • Build the interpretation centre of port activity, Port Centre, in the former headquarters of the Port of Barcelona in the Portal de la Pau.
  • Attract new cultural and recreational activity to the port and organise participatory events that facilitate port-city integration.
  • Identify, preserve and disseminate the assets of cultural interest existing in the Port of Barcelona. It has more than 700 inventoried heritage objects and the project to promote cultural port routes.
  • Promote social dialogue and coexistence with the port's neighbouring districts.
