More than traffic and passenger figures.

The gross value added (GVA) generated by port activity determines the importance of a port as a generator of wealth and competitiveness in its environment. The GVA measures the economic income from the services of companies, organisations and institutions provided throughout the entire logistics chain of maritime transport.

Economic and digitisation impact study

The Port of Barcelona has a new version of the Economic Impact Study of the Port of Barcelona, which, for the first time, takes into account the impact of digitisation. The analysis makes it possible to find out what added value port activity generates in the economy of the hinterland, as well as to obtain indicators to also assess the scope of the environmental and social impact. According to the Study, ldigitisation has facilitated up to 40% of the growth of the Port activity.

The study, carried out thanks to the collaboration of 126 representative companies of the Community Port of Barcelona, who have provided data on their activity segments. The data provided by the study show how the commercial activity of the Port of Barcelona has an impact on the creation of employment, creation of wealth, environmental sustainability and, ultimately, on the creation of prosperity and well-being for society.

The increase the port's productivity has been achieved thanks to the improvement of processes and operations and, significantly, to digitisation. The study calculates that the improvement in productivity supposes annual savings for companies in the Port Community of Barcelona of 450 million euros, and savings in the Catalan productive sectors of 1,184 million euros. M€.

Those responsible for the study asked the participating companies to assess the degree of impact of digitisation on their sales during the period 2006-2018. The results indicate that for the Port Community as a whole, digitisation would explain almost 40% of the increase in Port activity during this period.

The figures provided by the companies show that, although in the short term, digitisation has meant a reduction in employment needs, and in the long term, it has led to an increase in commercial activity that has resulted in more employment. Thus, it is estimated that digitisation has generated more than 2,500 new jobs in these 12 years.
