The lighthouse in Calella was built according to the architectural design established in the original Lighthouse Plan. It consists of a 10-metre-high cylindrical tower that rises above the house where the lighthouse keeper lived and is crowned by a glass dome. The light source is 46 metres above sea level. This lighthouse has become an iconic symbol in Catalonia.

Originally classified as a Third Order lighthouse, it sits on the Punta de Calella headland, a promontory that retains, on its western side, the sands from the river Tordera that give rise to the town's large beach.

Due to its proximity to the major industrial town of Calella —once home to several large knitwear and textile factories that relied on electricity— it became the first lighthouse in Catalonia to be connected to the mains electricity supply in 1916.

In January 1936, a study was commissioned for the installation of a radio beacon; however, the initiative was put on hold due to the outbreak of the Civil War.

On 6 December 1936, an anti-aircraft battery was positioned at the lighthouse to protect Barcelona's coastline, leading to its deactivation until the end of the war.  During this time, the lighthouse was subjected to multiple bombardments.
