Maritime signaling

The Port Authority of Barcelona has by law the competences of integral management of all the signals of the Port of Barcelona and the coastal network of the coast of Barcelona and Girona, formed by all the lighthouses and significant beacons. It is also responsible for the inspection of aids to navigation belonging to third parties along the entire coastline.

Port Services Act

All the lighthouses, beacons and buoys of the coastal network, from the coast of Vilanova to France, are under our supervision. For the rest of the maritime signals, whether they are under the responsibility of the Generalitat de Catalunya or any other public or private organization, the Port of Barcelona is responsible for the technical and functional inspection.

Our lighthouses

Many of the lighthouses in the maritime province of Barcelona are characterized by being immersed in the urban layout of the coastline. Get to know the lighthouses and beacons of the coastal network that are under our direct responsibility.

Most of the lighthouses managed by the port were built during the reign of Isabel II, between 1852 and 1868, based on a program of Prime Minister O'Donnell to illuminate the then "dark Spanish coast". Later on, other complementary and reinforcement ones were added.

Automation led to the opening of these facilities to the public in the year 2000. While preserving their main function of aiding navigation, it has led to the addition of new uses. Through agreements with local councils, some lighthouse buildings have been fitted out as cultural, nature and territory interpretation centers, or even as maritime signaling centers.
