Tons of experience

The Port of Barcelona has extensive experience in special cargo. In 2020 alone, the infrastructure handled 540,000 tons of special and project cargo and close to 790,000 tons in 2019. The main products handled are steel (coils and profiles, rods, wire and scrap), as well as more complex goods (yachts, public works machinery, railway wagons, transformers or silos). In addition, the wide range of multipurpose terminals and vehicles in Barcelona and the supply of car carriers lines that accept heavy machinery are an important attraction for industrial and project cargo.

High specialisation

The Port of Barcelona has established itself as a reference port for the cruise industry and this activity has led to the appearance of a premier industry of passenger boarding bridges for cruise terminals around the world. This activity, which must be carried out at the dock, requires special care in the handling and final assembly of these structures, which must be loaded onto special ships.

Multipurpose and specialised terminals

The Port of Barcelona has the best facilities and highly specialised personnel for the handling and lashing of all types of conventional and project cargo with the highest standards of efficiency and reliability.

Terminal Portnou

In its 10 hectare area, this multipurpose terminal with 600 m berthing and 15 draft, has two Ro-Ro ramps and four mobile cranes of up to 135 tons.

Terminal Sammer

This multipurpose terminal also has a surface area of 10 ha, a 750 m berth and a 14 m draft, and has four cranes for up to 120 tons of cargo and a Ro-Ro ramp.

Autoterminal and Setram

Terminals specialised in handling vehicles that, combined with the capacity of <cu>car carriers</cu>, can meet the demanding requirements of heavy and project cargo.

Developing the industry

Connections and access

The wide range of services for conventional and project cargo is possible thanks to the road and rail accesses that the Port of Barcelona continues to improve so that cargo approach maneuvers are faster and more efficient. In the future, the new basin in the southern part of the port will have large areas directly connected to the road network and the rail system to facilitate access for special transport.
