Blue economy

A strategic sector with a future

The blue economy is a very broad strategic sector that includes very diverse activities: port logistics, fishing, the nautical and naval industry, water sports, clean energy, science and technology linked to the sea and oceans and always governed by sustainability.

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations point to it as a new economy committed to a sustainable future, since it converges with the wishes of social, economic and environmental sustainability.

In Barcelona, the blue economy generates more than 15,000 jobs and bills some 4,000 million euros. The City Council develops a global strategy to which the Port of Barcelona adhered in April 2021 with the signing of a collaboration agreement that designates it as a key agent in this area.

Take advantage of opportunities

Port Vell is the Mediterranean leader in maintenance and repair of large boats (fit & repair), thanks to the specialisation and quality of the service and the existing auxiliary services. But, in addition, we have other activities that can contribute to consolidating the blue economy as a growth engine, especially linked to the strategy of turning Port Vell into hub an innovation. 

Goals and lines of action:

• Promote leading technologies and innovation to guarantee sustainable growth in fit & repairs. 
• Preserve the fishing sector and promote local products, to which the remodelling will contribute from the Fisherman's wharf.
• Promote leisure and sports activities related to the sea, taking advantage of the facilities, companies and institutions in the world of sailing located in Port Vell.
• Actively support the Boat Show as a showcase for Barcelona's nautical industry and blue economy.
• Creation of an incubator of companies in the world of sailing, under the auspices of the Barcelona Clúster Nàutic.
