Transformation of the Port Vell

  • In addition to its sporting relevance and prestige, a major event such as the America's Cup has a sustained impact on the economic and urban development of the host city. In the case of the Port of Barcelona, the most significant change will be experienced in the Port Vell.
  • Unlike previous editions, this time there are no plans to build new infrastructures, but rather to modernize and transform existing ones.

Economic, environmental and social sustainability

The Port of Barcelona's strategy for hosting the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup has focused on the search for long-term sustainability, encompassing three fundamental aspects: economic, environmental and social.

The decision to renovate and transform rather than build is a more sustainable alternative from an economic perspective. In addition, this edition of the competition introduces an innovation compared to previous editions: the teams themselves are responsible for financing and building the bases, while the organization is in charge of preparing the necessary services, sewage system, accesses and land and sea connections.

Among the most significant and complex actions, directly or indirectly related to the installation of the equipment bases, the following stand out:

  • Fisherman's Wharf, an area where a specific activity is carried out, which must be respected and must have continuity. The infrastructures necessary for fishing activity are modernized, making them more sustainable and open to the public.
  • Transfer of cruise and ferry operations from the Barcelona Nord dock to Adossat, accelerating the agreements reached with the Barcelona City Council in 2018, moving cruise activity away from the urban center.
  • Renovation of the Tinglados del Moll Oriental, former port warehouses of outstanding heritage value that will host various activities during the America's Cup, including the Port of Barcelona's new nautical bus station.
  • Completion of the opening to the public of the Nova Bocana area, which includes actions such as the new Rambla del "Trencaones" and the Mirador building.

In total, more than 120 million euros will be invested in a total of 20 actions, which are detailed in the following map.
