Ambient noise

Noise pollution is managed by the Noise Map of the Port of Barcelona, an instrument that allows us to graphically visualise the real noise level in its territory.

Precedent: the map of the Old Port

During 2012 and 2013, the Noise Map of the Port Vell sector was drawn up, an area in which the interaction between port activities and residential use can generate more areas of acoustic incidence. These works set a technical and methodological precedent to standardise environmental noise management in the port sector.

Scope and conclusions

The map considers separate noise immission levels from different emission sources (road traffic, maritime traffic, industrial activities and airborne noise), with immission values for each hourly period. The main conclusion is that the noise levels obtained in the area are influenced by road traffic and, to a lesser extent, by the ferries docked at the Port Vell piers.

Expansion to the entire port

During 2015 and 2016, the Noise Map was completed to include the rest of the port area. Each of the maps produced are represented in 2 printed plans, corresponding to the equivalent levels in two time periods: daytime (7 a.m. to 9 p.m.) and night-time (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.), and represent the annual average noise in each of these intervals. throughout a calendar year.

Acoustic zoning

The Acoustic Capacity Map, or acoustic zoning of the territory under study, which sets the sound quality goals and the limit values of noise immission in the outdoor environment, by day, evening and night.
