Fareras. La luz que nos guía

On Monday, 30 June 2025, the Port of Barcelona, in conjunction with the Barcelona Maritime Museum (MMB) inaugurated the exhibition “Fareras. La luz que nos guía” (Female lighthouse keepers. The light that guides us.), an inspirational exhibition curated by filmmaker Cristina Rodríguez Paz. The exhibition, which is located in the lobby and accessible from the museum’s courtyard, was free to visit and will be open until 28 September 2025.

The display focused on female lighthouse keepers in Spain, highlighting their role in a traditionally male-dominated profession. Only 26 women have officially worked in Spain’s lighthouses, the last representatives of a profession consigned to extinction by the 1992 Ports and Merchant Navy Act, which provided for the technical and automated management of maritime signals.

The exhibition space was dedicated to the first women to live and work in lighthouses and includes photographs, texts and a short film featuring the testimonies of six former lighthouse keepers, extracted from a documentary made by the curator herself. It offered a unique opportunity to explore the confluence between history and memory and to pay tribute to the women who dedicated themselves, with little recognition, to illuminating our shores.

After its run in the Port of Sóller at the Mallorca Maritime Museum - Museum of the Sea, and the Barcelona Maritime Museum, the exhibition's aim was to raise public awareness about the realities of port operations and highlight the social, economic and cultural importance of the ports and maritime signals on all our coastlines.

Port and Photography

The photographic image of the Port of Barcelona

The Port of Barcelona collaborated with the Photographic Association of Catalonia (AFC) to organise an exhibition as the closing event for its centenary celebrations.

The exhibition, which was on display at the AFC's headquarters located at Carrer del Duc, No. 14 until 10 January 2024, brought together forty reproductions of images —both historical and contemporary— captured by professional and amateur photographers who have immortalised the port environment.

According to Mr. Joan Alemany, the exhibition's curator, the collection reflected a variety of intentions and perspectives, including technical, documentary, and artistic approaches.

The exhibition sought to showcase the Port as a photographic subject and encourage visitors to ponder the blurred lines between creative expression and documentary (journalistic or technical) perspectives. It was complemented by a projection of historical images of the Port of Barcelona.

In view of the significant interest generated, the exhibition has been scheduled to tour other venues in order to further promote the cultural heritage of the Port. As a result, it could be visited at the Barceloneta Civic Centre from 4 to 27 July 2024.

From 2 August to 20 October 2024, coinciding with the America's Cup, the exhibition could be seen for free at the courtyard of the Maritime Museum of Barcelona.

From 6 February to 15 March 2025, could be seen for free at the Sala de les Ruïnes of the Pati Llimona Civic Centre.
