The project

Project focused on demonstrating the viability of a maritime system that works with alternative and clean energy, through the auxiliary generation of gas on board (Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas) facilitating the implementation of Directive 2014/94/EU on infrastructures, and other European Directives related to emissions and air quality.

Benchmark in the Mediterranean

The project aims to overcome existing barriers in the harmonisation of the regulatory framework and the standardisation of the technical solutions necessary for the supply of alternative fuels (NG and LNG) in ports and ships and illustrating new operations and alternative energy services through Energy Supply Companies.

The objective is to make the generation of electricity on board viable during berthing and departure operations, and during the ship's stay in port, and to become a reference project in the Mediterranean Sea.

An exportable model

Once the requirements and technical obstacles to be overcome have been analysed, the tests are implemented with the construction of a fuel supply infrastructure in land in the Port of Barcelona and another in a ferry.

Specifically, an auxiliary engine is installed on the Abel Matutes ferry (of the Balearia company), the connection of the Natural Gas supply with the berthing point, the necessary portable equipment to supply the supply of Liquefied Natural Gas and the LNG connections with the berthing point. Once in operation, the results are analysed to prepare a proposal for regulatory harmonisation, as well as to evaluate the possibilities of exploitation through the development of a business model.

Results of the project

  • Installation of an auxiliary supply system based on Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas on the ship Abel Matutes.
  • Connection of the Natural Gas supply to the berthing point in the Port of Barcelona.
  • Installation of a truck-ship supply system in the Port of Barcelona.
  • Study on the requirements and obstacles and specification of the tests and the consequent proposals for standardisation and harmonisation.

Participation of the Barcelona Port Authority

The Port of Barcelona has participated in the different activities of the project, and has led the construction of the onshore infrastructure and the implementation of the Dissemination Plan.
