The Port of Barcelona is the main piece of transport and service infra-structure in Catalonia and a benchmark port in the Euro-Mediterranean region. It has about 100 regular lines that directly link the Catalan capital with more than 200 ports on all six inhabited continentss.
It is Spain's top port for interna-tional traffic and is specialised in general cargo and goods of high added value, such as consumer goods, electronic products and vehicles.
Aware of its impact as service infrastructure and as an economic engine, the Port of Barcelona launched its Sectoral Sustainability Plan in 2016 to meet the sustainability goals of its Third Strategic Plan. This latter plan is based on the premise that in order to work towards sus-tainable development, we must take into account the expectations of the different stakeholders and provide a collective response from the Port Community.
The Port de Barcelona hould look to the challenges not only of the country and the city, but also of the world. That is why the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are incorporated. We want to continue working towards the economic, social and environmental development of the Port of Barcelona, for our stakeholders and for the global community, thereby con-tributing to the people's welfare.

One of the strategic pillars of the Port
of Barcelona is to guarantee its sustainable growth, in line with the United Nations Global Compact and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to which we are firmly commit-ted. This means enhancing the economic, social and environmental value that our infrastructure provides to society: a contribution on three levels that the Port Community generates collectively, with all the many different actors and professional profiles that it entails.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs)
DEVELOPING ECONOMIC VALUE
The economic growth of the Port of Barcelona has broken records in some of the categories analysed, such as the value of the goods and number of the passengers that have gone through the Port and short sea shipping. The Port of Barcelona is working to make this growth sustainable over time and take care of people and the environment.
SDG 8
PROMOTE SUSTAINED, INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH, FULL AND PRODUCTIVE EMPLOYMENT AND DECENT WORK FOR ALL
The growth of traffic in goods and the movement of passengers is accompanied by the concern that this growth is respectful of the surroundings and the environment.
›› In Catalonia, the creation of a total GVA in the economy of 3.531 billion euros.
›› 25% share of the Spanish maritime foreign trade market and 74% of Catalonia.
›› 9.7% increase in total traffic, in tonnes, compared to the previous year.
›› 4.5% increase in short sea shipping, replacing road transport and more environmentally friendly.
›› For every 1,000 cruise passengers, four jobs are created in Catalonia.

BUILD RESILIENT INFRASTRUCTURE, PROMOTE INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRIALISATION AND FOSTER INNOVATION
The growth of the Port has been possible thanks to a consolidation of infrastructure and its continuous improvement, with an extension of the investments year after year.
›› 47.3 km of railroad track within the Port precinct.
›› 61% of private investment over total investment.
›› 4.5% of investment in R&D&I over total investment.
›› 187,808 euros received for R&D&I projects.
SDG 12
ENSURE SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION PATTERNS
Sustainable con-sumption and production consist of promoting the efficient use of resources, energy efficiency and sustainable infrastructure.
›› 75 organisations follow the Sectoral Sustainability Plan of the Port of Barcelona.
›› Participation in European projects that work to reduce emissions, promote mobility with electric vehicles or the use of LNG for maritime transport.
›› 97.3% of purchases of products or services are carried out within the European Union.
DEVELOPING SOCIAL VALUE
The Port of Barcelona consists of all the people who work there, users and the metropolitan environment. This is why the development of social value is as strategic as economic or environmental development.

ENSURE HEALTHY LIVES AND PROMOTE WELL-BEING FOR ALL AT ALL AGES
Safety and hygiene at work are essential aspects that are being taken care of by Port Community organisation.
›› Celebration of the16th edition of the Day for Labour Health and Sustainability.
›› 15.6% drop in on-the-job accidents.
›› Boosted access to automated external defibrillators to ensure quick access in the event of cardiovascular emergencies.
›› Certified occupational hazard prevention management systems in 42.7% of the organisations.

ENSURE INCLUSIVE AND EQUITABLE QUALITY EDUCATION AND PROMOTE LIFELONG LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL
Education is important for working people and for promoting employment in the port sector.
›› Investment in education: 2,442 h/year on average per organisation.
›› Third edition of the Port Innova Barcelona Port Hackathon to boost inno-vation and the educational fabric.
›› Forma't al Port programme, with 434 participants, to prepare students for specific jobs in the port sector.
SDG 5
ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY AND EMPOWER ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS
In a sector with few women, this is a sensitive issue that the Port is trying to tackle.
›› 36% of the organisations have equality plans.
›› 53.3% of the organisations have protocols against sexual harassment.
SDG 8
PROMOTE INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC GROWTH, EMPLOYMENT AND DECENT WORK FOR ALL
Creating quality employment is a challenge that is extended to people with disabilities or who are at risk of social exclusion.
›› Annual growth (weighted average) of the staff by 3%.
›› 80.3% of the employees have a permanent employment contract.
›› 1.9% of those hired have some sort of disability.
›› 2% of those hired are at risk of social exclusion.
SDG 11
MAKE CITIES INCLUSIVE, SAFE, RESILIENT AND SUSTAINABLE
Actions are developed that help to ensure an environment that is inclusive and supportive of people and the city.
›› 21.3% of the organisations have mobility plans
›› Specific plan to integrate and promote the uses of certain spaces, such as the Port Vell, to encourage interrelation of the public space and use of the port.
›› MThe Maritime Museum of Barcelona as a space for safeguarding the city's maritime heritage.
DEVELOPING ENVIRONMENTAL VALUE
Taking care of the natural environment, reducing negative impacts and pro-moting good environmental practices within the Port Community is a daily challenge on which the Port has been working for years and for which it sets ambitious objectives.

ENSURE ACCESS TO WATER AND SANITATION FOR ALL
Reducing waste, preventing discharges and cleaning water.
›› Over 30 km of collectors and 16 pumping stations for port water sanitation.
›› 365 days per year of service for collecting and removing floating waste from the surface of the water.
›› Control and monitoring of the quality of water and sediments.
SDG 7
ENSURE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, RELIABLE, SUSTAINABLE AND MODERN ENERGY FOR ALL
This is geared towards energy efficiency and advanced technologies and less polluting fossil fuels, while promoting investment in sustainable infrastructure and non-polluting energy technologies.
›› Participation in five pilot projects to introduce natural gas as a mobility fuel.
›› Transformation of 26 trucks to natural gas that regularly carry out their activity in the Port precinc.
›› Study of the potential of renewable energy generation in the Port precinct.
SDG 13
TAKE URGENT ACTION TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS IMPACTS
Control all the environmental risks that the Port's activity can entail with the aim of preventing them and mini-mising as much as possible.
›› Promotion of work groups related to sustainability.
›› Signing of and adherence to voluntary agreements on reducing emissions related to climate change, such as voluntary agreements to reduce green-house gases and the World Ports Climate Action Plan.
›› Enhancement of rail intermodality and short sea shipping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

CONSERVE AND SUSTAINABLY USE THE OCEANS, SEAS AND MARINE RESOURCES
Prudent management of the sea is essential for a sustainable future. The Port is to the extent that the sea becomes its ally. To take care of the sea is to take care of the Port's activity.
