Work begins on the top-to bottom transformation of Barcelona's Old Port, the Port Vell, with an investment of over €86 million

Through a total of 17 actions, the Port of Barcelona is beginning to design the citizens' port of the future. The 17 actions represent an initial phase in the great transformation that the Port Vell will undergo in the coming years, and will all be finished before the 37th America's Cup kicks off on 22 August 2024. After the America's Cup has ended, the Port of Barcelona will continue to work hard to realise the future Port Vell by opening up areas such as the Barcelona Nord, Drassanes and Pescadors wharves to the public and to refurbish the Espanya wharf.

The economic results turn their back on the pandemic, growing above the turnover and cashflow figures of 2019, and provide financial strength to undertake major projects to be developed in the coming years. Key traffic segments, such as passengers and vehicles, are on their way to recovery. Containers achieved results similar to the previous year, against the backdrop of a slowdown in international maritime traffic. The Port of Barcelona closed financial year 2022 with turnover of €181 million, a year-on-year increase of 20% and 5% above the year before the pandemic and operating results were €54 million.

The association, which gathers the main Mediterranean ports, has set itself the objective of providing its members with the necessary tools to advance in decarbonization and take advantage of the new challenges of globalization. Cooperation between the two Mediterranean shores represented in the Association is key to reinforcing the central role of the Mediterranean in international trade flows. Founded in 2018, MEDPorts has the objective of promoting collaboration between Mediterranean ports to face the new challenges of international trade and logistics.
