Improvement measures

Various measures applied by the Port and the city have improved the quality of sheltered waters in recent years. The most effective measures include the Port Authority building a new drainage network for wastewater and rainwater in the port's service area in 2000 and 2001, with more than 30 km of collectors and 16 pumping stations.

Other actions with a significant impact on improving port waters were taken by the city of Barcelona to prevent flooding and water discharges following heavy rains. These improvements are estimated to have reduced contributions of organic pollutants from the city network by 75% relative to 1996 levels.
